AFL Women’s Crows captain and Australian Olympic Basketballer Erin Phillips will be the guest of honour at this year’s Lower Eyre Peninsula Sports Person of the Year Awards. 

The award categories this year include Sports Person of the Year for those who are 17-years-old and over, as of October 1 last year; the Junior Sports Person of the Year for those under 17 years of age, as of October 1 this year.

Another category was also added to the sports awards this year, the Sports Volunteer of the Year.

This award recognises volunteers who have given their time and commitment to a sporting club, team or organisation.  

Nominations for this category could include any of the large number of volunteers who, week after week, volunteer to help with coaching, umpiring, scoring, ground preparation. 

There is also still time to nominate for the awards and community is encouraged to think about those who play and are involved in local sport,  achieved excellence in their sporting field over the past year and volunteers who play a huge part in and around the sporting arena.

Last years Junior Sports Person of the Year was Charlotte Nichols while Ben Smith took out the senior award. 

The awards dinner to be held at the Ravendale Sporting Complex on Friday, January 5 next year.

As well as the awards dinner in January, award winners will also be acknowledged and celebrated the the community at the Port Lincoln City Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony on January 26. 

Port Lincoln City Council mayor Bruce Green said the Lower Eyre Peninsula Sports Person of the Year Awards was an opportunity to recognise home-grown Eyre Peninsula talent. 

“(The awards are) a celebration of our regions sporting talent and their achievements, and we will see the winners awarded in the presence of Erin Phillips who is an inspiration to many,” Mr Green said. 

Athletes from across the Lower Eyre Peninsula from all districts south of Mount Hope, Cummins and Tumby Bay are eligible for nomination. 

The new nomination deadline for the awards is 5pm on Friday, December 15.
