Wanna catch a salmon

Here’s what was biting and where.

West Coast

From the latest report on the far west coast, the mulloway have slowed down a bit. Numbers of fish have been down, but most of the fish that were caught have been between 90 and 130cm. Whole squid or fresh salmon were the successful baits.

Most of the fish were caught after dark around the bigger tide changes. Streaky, Venus and the other bays have all continued to fish well for King George whiting, garfish, tommys, salmon trout, snook and squid with flathead beginning to appear on the tidal beaches.

Salmon continue to be caught along the surf beaches on lures and salted pilchards. Talia has had fish to 3.5kg. Sharks have been prolific after dark – gummy sharks to 1.2m and school sharks to 1.5m.

Coffin Bay

King George whiting, garfish, snook, tommies and a few gummy sharks have been reported. Seal corner has produced whiting to 38cm; cockles or fresh squid baits have been the best for the whiting.

Farm Beach has been fishing well early in the morning when the wind is down. King George whiting to 39cm, garfish to 40cm, tommies, squid, gummy sharks and a few flathead have been reported.

Offshore has really started to fire up; bluefin tuna to 15kg, harlequins, gummy sharks, bronze whalers to 10 feet, bight redfish to 55cm, swallowtail and queen snapper to 75cm. Fresh squid seems to be the best bait for everything. Tuna have also been spotted between Krause Rock and Reef Head.

Almonta and Gunyah beaches have produced a few nice salmon on salted pilchard baits fished on the incoming tide.

Port Lincoln

King George whiting to 47cm have been caught in numerous areas around the bays and along the passage. The most productive area still seems to be around the town jetty and wharf. Snapper Rock has produced squid late in the afternoon. Louth has had snook to 60cm and some XL tommies to 30cm. Small schools of tuna have been spotted in the bay but continue to frustrate those attempting to catch them. Throwing small surface lures can be effective. Kingfish to 75cm have been reported around all of the jetties in town. Large plastics are most effective. The fish have ranged from 40cm to 80cm with some bigger fish being hooked in the marina in the early morning. Sleaford to Wanna has produced some nice salmon to 4kg on Malosi Marksman lures in Gold or Onyx. Offshore fishing has been extremely good. Samson fish to 135cm, tuna to 18kg and nannygai to 60cm had been reported stretching from Thistle Island to the back of Williams Island.

Tumby Bay

King George whiting to 48cm, silver trevally to 65cm, squid, salmon, snook and big garfish have all been reported at the Group and in the bay near town. There has been a smaller school of yellowfin whiting toward Ski Beach. Surface lures are the best way to go about chasing them such as the Daiwa Slippery Dog.

Port Neill

King George whiting to 40cm, tommies, snook, garfish and a few squid have been caught near the jetty, along the shoreline and out from Back Beach.
