The Hike Hair Don’t Care ladies have successfully raised more than $5000 for Beyond Blue through a series of community activities, including a fun and colourful cake stall on a cloudy, windy day.
Coastrek is hiking for mental health supporting Beyond Blue, focused on, “fun, fitness, friends, fresh air and fundraising”.
Team leader Sandy Siviour said she chose to complete the Beyond Blue Coastrek challenge with a group of friends as she was passionate about the cause.
“From my own personal experiences, my friends, my family’s, also some of the team members, we’ve all had our own challenges,” she said.
“We work together as friends to get through them but I think it’s super important, just the awareness for people to talk about it and be open because that helps people get through them.
“Winter can be quite gloomy and having friends on board to help you do a bit of walking and fitness, which is so important for mental health – the encouragement we can bring each other – were all reasons to take on the challenge.”
The ladies will now take off on a 35-kilometre coastal trek along the Fleurieu Peninsula trail on Friday, September 5, starting at Heysen’s Trail and ending at Victor Harbor.
“We’re confidently aiming for about seven hours,” Sandy said.
“There’s 10 of us, four local Port Lincoln members, four Adelaide girls and two Victor Harbor girls, with Nita Kay as support crew.”
When asked how she came up with the name, Sandy said she sent the message to her pals asking who would like to join, looked into the mirror and did not want to do her hair.
“So that’s how I came up with the name and so it has stuck since the start,” she laughed.
Fundraising events included the cake stall, which raised more than $2000, a movie night and an online raffle.
