Charlton Women in Agriculture and Business visited Port Lincoln Library to update knowledge of the extensive services provided for community use.
Members assembled in the Community Room where manager Louise Mrdjen outlined the structure of the state libraries.
They are all linked electronically and all library resources can be accessed by anyone across the state by using a ‘One Card’ obtained at no charge from the local library.
This means that hard copy and large print books both, eBooks, audio books and DVDs are now at your fingertips and can be pre-ordered online or via local library staff.
Louise asked that people tell the local staff what they are interested in, or looking for.
The local collection receives new resources each week so there is a regular turnover of materials.
In addition to the Community Room the main space is light and airy with areas for children’s interest (books, music and toys), fiction and non-fiction, newspapers, magazines, in comfortable surroundings.
It is certainly a welcoming and safe place.
Other services provided include printing and photocopying, and access to computers (free Wi-Fi) with programs like Ancestry and Trove, which are well used by those doing family research.
A home delivery service helps those unable to access the building.
Louise asked that members share any family or local history they had, either written or oral, with the library.
A number of groups meet in the library, some regularly and others sporadically. These include Learning Auslan, Friends of Dementia, Spinners, Card players, the STEM program, book launches and school holiday activities.
In addition, a Justice of the Peace is available every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
Members were impressed to see children creating with Lego, and the current display of photos of local birds, along with the very large wooden dining table and chairs in use, donated by Amy Bishop.
That table arrived with the Bishop family when they first came to Port Lincoln in 1839.
The group also celebrated a special birthday for WAB member Carol-Ann Glover.
