100 years of Port Lincoln bowls

Port Lincoln Bowling Club celebrated 100 years recently with rolls down the green and an evening at the clubrooms.

Club secretary Chris Gardner, who has been playing bowls with the club for 25 years, said the club held a social bowls day to celebrate on Friday, April 4, sponsored by Sylvia Parker.

That evening, a dinner took place to celebrate 100 years, hosted by David Nankivell.

Mrs Gardner said it was a wonderful night for all.

“We had past players from Victoria and Queensland, we had a lot of past players attend the night, actually,” she said.

“The majority of our living life members were there so that was pretty special as well.”

Meals were catered by Chelsea Christian, and bar manager/club member Dion Stacey looked after the drinks.

“We had a heap of volunteers, we had a 100-year committee and again Sylvia Parker was probably the mainstay of that – she did an enormous amount of work,” Mrs Gardner said.

“Then we had a sub-committee that did the decorations for the night and we also produced a 100-year history booklet.”

Community members that would like a copy can ask a club member for one.

“There were some officials on the night, we had the mayor and the CEO from the council there,” she said.

“The male and female presidents from the Southern Eyre Bowling Association were there and representatives from the other four bowling clubs in our association.

“We also had special guests Ben and Ana Menzel from RAA who made a massive contribution to a raffle that we had on the night.”

The clubrooms were decorated blue and silver, with big 100 balloons against the far wall.

A 100-year birthday cake was shared by guests.
