A new disability peer network is being set up in Port Lincoln by JFA Purple Orange through its SKILL SA project, and local people with disabilities are invited to help design and lead it from the start.
SKILL SA project lead Andrew Gibson said the network would put local voices at the centre, supporting people to connect with each other, share knowledge and build confidence to take up opportunities in the Port Lincoln community.
“We realised that there was a need in Port Lincoln for people with a disability to be able to choose their own adventure,” he said.
“To be able to make decisions, connect with their community, find out information about services and supports and share all that information, you can share common problems instead of struggling through it on your own.
“It’s also a way to meet people and not feel isolated.”
The Port Lincoln peer network will focus on local issues, sharing local information and resources, understanding and using the National Disability Insurance Scheme, networking and building self-advocacy skills through workshops and guest presentations.
JFA Purple Orange is a not-for-profit organisation working across South Australia to create a more inclusive world where people with disability have access to the same opportunities as everyone else – currently running nine other peer networks across the state.
The SKILL SA project wants to hear from people with disability, their families and supporters in Port Lincoln who are interested in the steps and opportunities for taking charge in their life.
Interested people should contact Andrew on 0413 854 863 or andrewg@purpleorange.org.au about getting involved.
An information meeting will be set up when there is enough interest to get started.
