Banner for stronger nature laws

An event was held at Tulka on Saturday, November 4 to produce a banner for the Australian Conservation Foundation’s Community for Creatures campaign, with community members attending and lending their artistic skills.

The banner was created with the support of the Eyre Peninsula Environment Protection Alliance and lists all of the threatened and endangered species found at Whalers Way.

Australian Conservation Foundation mobilisation coordinator Phoebe Rountree said Community for Creatures was a week of action that was about bringing communities together to support nature protection.

“The campaign was a week of action organised by the Australian Conservation Foundation and a number of other partner groups in the ‘Places You Love’ alliance, which is a network of organisations campaigning for stronger nature laws that actually protect nature,” Ms Rountree said.

An independent review, Ms Rountree said, found Australia’s national environment laws were failing.

“We have over 2000 threatened plants, animals and ecosystems on our threatened species list, and an independent review by Graham Samuels found our environment laws are failing to protect these ecosystems, plants and animals,” she said.

“So, we are campaigning for environment laws that are new, strong and actually protect nature.

“That is the demand that we want our community members to take to those that represent them.”

The finished banner will be gifted to Federal Grey MP Rowan Ramsey as the community demand for stronger nature laws and encourage him to speak up to the Environment Minister for action to protect nature.
